Loon Count Update 2012

      Hello Loon Counters,

I have tallied the final loon count results and wanted to share them with you.

We managed to cover the lake with counters again. It seems that when one regular counter has something happening on Loon Count day, someone else step up and we get it done. We have a great group of people and I Thank You All !

We had a total of 29 Adults and 2 Chicks for 2012.

From my records this is above average for the past nine years however the lower count years have typically been skewed by poor weather. This year was a perfect Loon count day and the numbers reflect that.

Again, Thank You for your time and effort and have a great rest of the summer!

       Ron Fluet

Hello Loon Counters.  I hope you enjoyed this year's loon count.  I don't believe the weather could have been any better, so hoping you all had fair skies and little wind for your counts.  I wanted to get the word out about a couple of things that the Maine Loon Project is doing here at Maine Audubon and thought e-mail was the best way to get in touch with most of you.

      1) Habitat Quality Assessments: Though a bit delayed, the protocol and datasheets for this are finally READY!  Please check out our website at  http://maineaudubon.org/wildlife-habitat/the-maine-loon-project/loon-habitat-quality/ , check out the bottom of the page, under the resource section, for the PDF of the Habitat Quality Instructions and Dataseheet. If you'd like a printed version mailed to you, please reply to this e-mail and copy bwilson@maineaudubon.org but please be patient!  We are both on vacation off and on for the next couple of weeks, but I will be checking e-mail and trying to get this information out between days out of town for vacation (so please ignore my "auto-reply", I will be checking e-mail but only responding to loon counters!)  Thanks for your patience, and in advance, for your willingness to check out this new protocol and perhaps help collect this important information!

       2) Membership Special:  Thanks to all who have joined Maine Audubon as a result of our membership special for loon counters.  If you would like to take advantage of this great opportunity, please visit http://maineaudubon.org/wildlife-habitat/the-maine-loon-project/  and click on the membership special to join.

I look forward to getting all your loon count forms back in the coming month, and if you have any questions about the protocol, please don't hesitate to e-mail or leave me a phone message.  But do please be patient!  I will be checking e-mail and phone messages, but there may be times when I am unable to return calls.  Thanks for understanding and for being part of the loon count and the Maine Loon Project at Maine Audubon.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

       Susan
